(300th Post!) Countdown to New Year's With Christmas! Day 2: Top 10 TV Christmas Episodes Ever

10. Psych- Christmas Joy- 2008

This underrated dramadey of a TV show boasted a Christmas episode in 2008. This episode was the beginning for a funny line, main character, Shawn Spencer said. "Why, yes I solve one case every week. And usually one around Christmas."

9. Desperate Housewives- Boom Crunch- 2009

I may be going recent specials here but this great TV show took a break with this big cliffhanger of an episode. This episode has some jokes and one big cliffhanger from when we saw a hand hanging out of a workshop window. Someone died. It was either Bree, Orson, or Karl. Hmmm...

8. The Big Bang Theory- The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis- 2008

I'm young so I don't know a lot of older tv episodes but I know recent ones and this piece of art from the mind of Chuck Lorre shows Sheldon Cooper trying to find a gift for Penny. It ends with a lot of laughs.

7. I Love Lucy- The I Love Lucy Christmas Show- 1956

I do know some very old oldies though. I've never heard of this episode until this very year despite watching I Love Lucy for a whole summer. This episode has a lot of laughs and memories. Also a very mysterious ending.

6. Roseanne- Santa Claus- 1991

This show's TV specials are known for Halloween but has a good enough Christmas episode to take #4. Roseanne poses as Santa Claus and their's 5 times the fights. 'Tis the Season!

5. Home Improvement- Twas the Night Before Chaos- 1994

The comedy TV show that boasted a Christmas episode every year and warmed our hearts has this episode as #5. This has Jill's parents arguing over a war video and Tim trying to defeat his neigbor when an unexpected ________ comes.

4. Drake and Josh- Merry Christmas Drake and Josh- 2008

This may be considered a movie but it's from a TV show so it's a TV show today! This has all the likes of Chevy Chase's Christmas as Josh wants a traditional Christmas. Things go arye though but not because of Zigfee. The last scene has all the characters. An obvious nod to the show and its cast as this was their final get together.

3. The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius- Holly Jolly Jimmy- 2003

I picked this Nickelodeon special over all the rest because Spongebob has catchy songs but so does Jimmy Neutron and Jimmy Neutron is a tradition especially when Goddard turns around with his Rudolph-Like nose. This special just tops Danny Phantom's, Rugrats', Spongebob's, and The Fairly OddParents'.

2. The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy- Billy and Mandy Save Christmas- 2005

I may have put 3 kid shows in a row but we all love them. Who doesn't? This is a laugh through the whole episode kind of episode. It's very funny with a thick plot and relatable characters. Great for everyone!

1. Friends- The One With The Holiday Armadillo- 2000

What can you say about this one but three things. 1- Funny. 2- Best Ever. 3- Holiday Armadillo! Aw, yeah

Why So Breakable?

The cat lingers around the Christmas Tree. The family exchanges presents and coos at the cat. A cat's duty is an official duty so as a Christmas tradition the cat pounces onto the Christmas tree. The tree falls over tinsel, garland, star, ornaments in all. The family's fear rises when they see the shattered colors of ornaments lying on the ground. "OUT!" the father yells. The cat hang it's head in dismay. This after all will be it's first Christmas---alone. It wanders down the street and across the sidewalk. She can see the silhouette of the family angrily sweeping up their broken damages. "Maybe you shouldn't have been so hard on Fluffy, Howard." "Every year this cat tackles our tree for some strange reason every year! I'm done and I've had it!" "But it's Christmas!" The cat heard and it's smile faded to a frown and it walked away sadly. Less fortunate people throw empty cans at the shamed cat. It shakes it off while the people laugh. All of a sudden a car comes by with a little boy who snatched the cat. The car travels a far distance, say some 700 miles. They drive to a feline shelter. However the cat knows they're luckier than the tigers and lions who do not know the meaning of Christmas. 700 miles away the cat's family, except for Howard, went out searching for Fluffy. "Fluffy!" Fluuuufy!" The calls ring out but no luck. Finally, at midnight they give up and head home. They walk home shamefully. The kids shake their heads at their father and head to bed. Miles and miles away, like a split screen comparison of two people who love each other apart, the cat begins sleep. "Ho Ho Ho!" Fluffy jumps up. Santa comes inside the feline shelter and claims Fluffy. The cat doesn't know what will happen she's traveled at least 70,000 miles this night looking over the Taj Mahal, The Great Wall, The Eiffel Tower and even the Golden Gate Bridge. They fly over Disney World then back to the North Pole for a 'pit stop' and then finally in Lugger ville back to the felines home. Santa drops her down the chimney and magically shifts her under the tree. The kids awoke with glum looks on their faces despite the fact that it was Christmas morning. They see a cat under the tree and they now live happily ever after. How do I know this, you say little cats? Well you see I'm Fluffy, kittens. Yes their fear in shattered color turned into glow on their joyful faces as they yelled, and I quote: "Thanks Santa!" Yes just how did they know?

5 Days of Christmas: Day 3: Virginia's Letter

Dear Editor

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
Papa says, "If you see it in The Post, it's so."
Please tell me the truth, Is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia O'Hanlon

The answer as published in the New York paper was:

Virginia,

Your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except what they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else more real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

5 Days of Christmas: Day 2: Christmas Quotes

"The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree is the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other." Burton Hillis

"The only blind person at Christmastime is he who has not Christmas in his heart." Helen Keller

"Once again we find ourselves enmeshed in the Holiday Season, that very special time of year when we join with our loved ones in sharing centuries-old traditions such as trying to find a parking space at the mall. We traditionally do this in my family by driving around the parking lot until we see a shopper emerge from the mall, then we follow her, in very much the same spirit as the Three Wise Men, who 2,000 years ago followed a star, week after week, until it led them to a parking space." Dave Barry

"Christmas, my child, is love in action. Every time we love, every time we give, it's Christmas." Dale Evans Rogers

"This, the spirit of Christmas, that forever and ever endures. May it leave its richest blessing in the hearts of you and yours." Unknown

"Santa Claus has the right idea. Visit people once a year." Victor Borge

"Never worry about the size of your Christmas tree. In the eyes of children, they are all 30 feet tall." Larry Wilde

"From home to home, and heart to heart, from one place to another. The warmth and joy of Christmas brings us closer to each other." Emily Matthews

"The joy of brightening other lives, bearing each others' burdens, easing other's loads and supplanting empty hearts and lives with generous gifts becomes for us the magic of Christmas." WC Jones

"MERRY CHRISTMAS!" George Bailey

5 Days of Christmas: Day 1: Christmas Jokes

Why was Santa's helper depressed? He had low elf-esteem.

What do you get if you cross a snowman with a shark? Frostbite.

What do angry mice send to each other at Christmas? Cross-mouse cards.

Why does Father Christmas cry a lot? Because he gets a little santamental.

What did Santa say to Mrs. Claus when he looked out the window? Looks like rain, dear.

What do you call someone who doesn't believe in Father Christmas? A rebel without a Claus.

What Christmas carol do new parents like best? Silent Night.

The History of Basketball (Theme Thursday)

In early December 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian-born physical education professor and instructor at the International Young Men's Christian Association Training School (YMCA) (today, Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied and at proper levels of fitness during the long New England winters. After rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto a 10-foot (3.05 m) elevated track. In contrast with modern basketball nets, this peach basket retained its bottom, and balls had to be retrieved manually after each "basket" or point scored; this proved inefficient, however, so a hole was drilled into the bottom of the basket, allowing the balls to be poked out with a long dowel each time. The peach baskets were used until 1906 when they were finally replaced by metal hoops with backboards. A further change was soon made, so the ball merely passed through, paving the way for the game we know today. A soccer ball was used to shoot baskets. Whenever a person got the ball in the basket, his team would gain a point. Whichever team got the most points won the game. The baskets were originally nailed to the mezzanine balcony of the playing court, but this proved impractical when spectators on the balcony began to interfere with shots. The backboard was introduced to prevent this interference; it had the additional effect of allowing rebound shots. Naismith's handwritten diaries, discovered by his granddaughter in early 2006, indicate that he was nervous about the new game he had invented, which incorporated rules from a children's game called "Duck on a Rock", as many had failed before it. Naismith called the new game "Basket Ball".

The first official game was played in the YMCA gymnasium on January 20, 1892 with nine players. The game ended at 1-0; the shot was made from 25 feet (7.6 m), on a court just half the size of a present-day Streetball or National Basketball Association (NBA) court. By 1897–1898 teams of five became standard.

The Christmas That Always Will Be

Many years before for a long while Christmas would always be held at my house. Yes my name was not on the mortgage but when we were littler we always called our house. There would be at least a month of preparation for the big night that we would struggle to host. We were always in Florida for Thanksgiving so Christmastime began in the blazing sun. My aunt would host the feast while we were down there and up in Massachusetts my grandmother would host Thanksgiving. We'd go trick-or-treating in our town and Easter would be at my aunt's house. The summer holidays at my aunt's like Easter. New Year's we've begun to go to my uncle and aunt's house. It's funny though. You don't consider the Fourth of July or Halloween; holidays. Holidays seems like a time for snow, Santa and festivity. My brother, sister-in-law, and sister-in-law's family celebrate Ramadan and my cousins celebrate Hanukkah. I'm not aware of anyone in my family who celebrates Kwanzaa. But I'm going off on a tangent. The focus of this post is Christmas.
As I was saying Christmas would always be at our house. Around two days before Christmas Eve my father, sister and I would go to pick up my grandmother in Fall River. When we finally came back from the hour ride we would get her settled in. But as I grew up I had to go to school on those days. What was the point of going to school on the 22ND and 23rd though? In 1st Grade we got out on the 20Th and now we get out 11 hours before Christmas Eve. Yes on Christmas Eve Eve. Hahaha I remember that joke always trying to get Christmas to come sooner even though it's been here for a month. The whole Christmastime. Sounds of the Seasons on Music Choice, the advent calendars and the Christmas Tree. But in our hearts we all can't wait for the morning of the 25Th. When I did get home from school though I would usually make a snow angel at the bus stop. But last-year's ice storm halted school until at least I think, correct me if I'm wrong, January 3rd? And this year a surprising car hit our bus stop hut so it just won't be the same. I do hope they rebuild it. It would be finally 3:00 December 23rd! Oh the excitement was brewing!
I would come home to my grandmother and it felt more like Christmas than the 26Th, 25Th and 24Th. My dog was covered in snow the cutest little thing the countdown calendar of 2 days until Christmas but 1 of the 3 countdowns grew mold over the 365 days and we had to bid farewell to the wood planks in the sack. I never appreciated it until it was gone. Of course you know what I mean. I appreciated everything but you appreciate it more when it's gone. It's just logical. So nighttime would come and I hope to sleep in the living room. Once we wake up from watching Drake and Josh I would dash away into the den. There would be the all famous NORAD Tracks Santa. But this year I will not be watching Drake and Josh for it has ended at least 11 months ago. When the Christmas special came on with Zigfee my friends and I would assign each other characters and I was Zigfee. Yes he was the cutest little guy. Fleeb ega quishtiv. But NORAD wasn't the same because of...yeah. But it was still just as good. My grandmother, sister and I would then make a Gingerbread house. It would be great icing even my grandma had to taste a little bit. Alas last year we got a Gingerbread tree.
Also the previous year we went to my aunt's house for Christmas. No longer our house. It was at that moment that I noticed all the traditions fading. But you know fate it has the knack of fixing the puzzle within the year. Like Dora the Explorer solving problems in 30 minutes. My sister and I listened to Viva la Vida, I'm Yours, and Livin' la Vida Loca. The first two songs were repetitive during Florida that year. Throughout the car ride I sang the entire, correct lyrics for the whole song. The first time I did that all year. My aunt had a small tree so I brought the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree to compare it. But of all the things to happen the ornament fell. All I could do was just watch. Wow. That wasn't so bad because more traditions fell into place. I helped my cousin build his LEGOs at the corner end-table with one chair, and my aunt got me a thing called Elf on the Shelf which is a tradition that succeeded. We followed NORAD in a messy room of my cousin's. And I played pool without pool ques while watching the Holiday Bowl of Notre Dame vs. Hawaii. So it turned out to be an OK Christmas Eve because we still left the cookies and milk and even though we couldn't sleep in the same room as my brother, now 25, we developed something new. I went to my sister's room and she got the floor. Aww yeah. Of course you know the feeling, not falling asleep until 2:30 and waking up at 3:00. So at 3:00 I got the stockings and woke my sister up. It'd be 3 hours until I got into my parents room and watched A Christmas Story. We opened our presents and then my uncle and grandmother came for Christmas Day Dinner. We never had breakfast. I played a college football game on the Wii from the new game and my baby cousin came over to play with the rubber duckies.
This year however we went to Florida in October which made us go to Thanksgiving at my other aunt's house and she can't handle Thanksgiving and Christmas so we have Christmas again this year. I tried hard to get new traditions and we're going back to the old, faithful traditions. It worked out for the best though...well actually my aunt's dogs: Sheila and Riley passed away so they weren't there for Thanksgiving but I still played pool without pool ques while watching a college game (Xavier). Their other dog Henry tried to attack me. So i spent the rest of the night watching Land of the Lost.
My grandmother has moved to Florida. The bus stop was left in a heap. Drake and Josh was canceled. Christmas can't stay still. NORAD is more serious. We have a gingerbread tree. It snowed in October. Mold grew on decorations. We now have Simpson advent calendars. And if we hadn't gone to Florida in October, Christmas would be back there. But I guess we're going to have to pull this together as prep has begun 25 days before Christmas. But we are going back into the same bed that we had slept in with my brother years before and all this time I thought I had stepped into a Threshold of new Christmas traditions. As Mr. Monk would say picture go backwards. As I went backwards towards the threshold door.
