50 Favorite Albums: 46

Big Brother and the Holding Company was never the premiere band, nor were they ever prestigious, but I'll be damned if their songs weren't great to listen to. And their album, Cheap Thrills, the last one with Janis Joplin as lead singer, just had the makings of a classic from the beginning. Not only did Joplin have one of the most killer voices of the 1960s, but she used it to record Piece of My Heart, the biggest track on the album.

Cheap Thrills: 1968 blues rock album from Big Brother and the Holding Company.

This Week's Sports by Davids

Two notable things about this set of covers. One: the last shown with Tony Romo is the four hundredth Sports by David cover and two: this is my last ever NFL Preview. Farewell, my lovelies.

Roger Federer's Amazing Shot

On July 2nd at the U.S. Open, Roger Federer unleashed an amazing between-the-legs shot with his tennis racket to showcase why he is still the best. There's not much to say about it besides that, but it's just so astounding!

50 Favorite Albums: 47

Though not my favorite album from U2, War is still pretty damn good. New Year's Day and 40 are both pretty decent songs, but this album gets onto the list essentially because of the greatness of one song altogether. Sunday Bloody Sunday might very well be, not just the definitive U2 song, but also their best. It is a shining example of the post-punk anthem that popularized U2 so much when they were first starting out. It elevated War to become U2's first number one album.

War: 1983 rock album from U2.

50 Favorite Albums: 48

Rolling Stone placed The Beatles' Revolver at third on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time. I feel a little differently about it, of course, because I am placing it at forty-eight on my own list. But there's no doubting its greatness. Some of the most iconic songs, not just from The Beatles, but from any musical group, are on this album. Yellow Submarine, Here, There and Everywhere, Eleanor Rigby. Even what some consider The Beatles' best, Tomorrow Never Knows, is featured. The list goes on and on. Plus, it was the first exposure to the psychedelic melodies The Beatles would later come to boast as somewhat of a specialty.

Revolver: 1966 pop rock album from The Beatles.

Steve Jobs Trailer

I have so much more faith in this Steve Jobs biopic than I ever did for the one with Ashton Kutcher. This one just seems so much more well-made. Directed by Danny Boykin and written by Aaron Sorkin. That's a pretty killer combination right there. But then you add in Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet and Jeff Daniels and Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniak and you've got a recipe for a vast improvement over the other biopics. This trailer serves to reaffirm that. Super well-done.

The New Spider-Man

Some bittersweet news here. Tom Holland (from such movies as In the Heart of the Sea) has been selected to be the kid behind the new on-screen portrayal of Peter Parker, also known as Spider-Man. In addition to finally appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with such movies as Captain America: Civil War, a new stand-alone Spider-Man movie co-produced by Marvel and Sony, and Avengers: Infinity War, he will also be joined by writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Sam on Freaks and Geeks) and director Jon Watts (Cop Car) for the rebooted Spider-Man trilogy. The bitter part of this news is that it is now official (though it was always far-fetched) that Tobey Maguire will not be Peter Parker. He will not be returning. But don't worry. He will always be Spider-Man. Now, it's time to see what Holland can do.

50 Favorite Albums: 49

After hearing Jimmy Fallon, as Neil Young, sing Old Man with Neil Young, himself (and how haunting it was!) I decided to pursue the song and, subsequently, the rest of the album. What I found was an amazing arrangement that you would think would be somewhat abbreviated initially, but it just flows too nicely. Besides Old Man, Harvest also boasts Heart of Gold and a live recording of The Needle and the Damage Done. The collaborations are what elevates this album to the top fifty. Not only are there elements of Crosby, Stills, and Nash, but there is also the London Symphony Orchestra and James Taylor. Plus, it was the best-selling album of 1972!

Harvest: 1972 folk rock album from Neil Young.

Exclusive Ant-Man Clip

In the past, when Paul Rudd has visited Conan, he has always pulled an old bait and switch by pretending like a clip from his new movie is going to be shown, but instead it is a hilariously lousy clip from an old movie called Mac & Me. Well, since he's working for Marvel now as Scott Lang, this doesn't fly with the company. Instead, we were treated to something pretty awesome. A clip from Ant-Man not seen in the movie. Pretty great!

Marriage Equality

On June 27, a landmark Supreme Court decision was made to allow for complete marriage equality nationwide. I know you've probably heard everything there is to hear about this topic, but I just thought it was a great day in American history, worthy of commemoration! Good on the U.S.!

50 Favorite Albums: 50

Most of my love for Frank Sinatra comes from his dabbling in the swing genre, to use a completely inproportionate verb. But Nice 'n' Easy, an album named after the title of the first track, vaults Sinatra into more of the musical world of ballads. Despite, of course, the title track, Nice 'n' Easy, which drew me to the album in the first place and exposed me to the wealth of songs provided, as well. Nice 'n' Easy, the song, has one of my all-time favorite song lyrics, "We're on the road to romance." Very good collection of songs that earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.

Nice 'n' Easy: 1960 vocal jazz album from Frank Sinatra.

Tracy Morgan's Interview

Nearly one year since the fatal accident Tracy Morgan was involved in after a nighttime comedy show, he spoke out on The Today Show for his first interview. He clearly still has a little way to go, but it's very nice to see that he is well. Good to hear his voice again.

What to Expect in the Last Year of the Blog

I promised you a post detailing what you could expect to see in the final year of My Power Is Beyond Your Understanding and, lo and behold, here it is. From now until July 31st, 2016, we will be having regularly scheduled posts, but also this slew of stellar goodness to celebrate and honor the legacy and conclusion of this storied blog! Here's what to look to forward to:

  • As with the past two years, I will be having daily countdown lists (but this time I'm including weekends!) on my favorite aspects of entertainment. This year, you'll see my seventy-five favorite books, sixty favorite television characters, seventy favorite movie scenes, and fifty favorite albums (like music). That'll be a good combination to end those daily countdowns.
  • I am going to break down Sports by David and Entertainment by David by the covers. Which athletes and sports and entertainers have appeared on the most covers? And which ones are my favorites?
  • There will be a tournament to determine the best ever tradition we've had on My Power Is Beyond Your Understanding.
  • One of these traditions, the Best Comic Tournament, will become the Best Comic of All-Time Tournament for one last ride in January.
  • The DFTBA Tournament will also be making its triumphant return in a brand new, revamped format known as "simulation."
  • I am going to rank all of the presidents of the United States. (This'll be good!)
  • For one last time, I am going to rank my one hundred favorite people. But instead of spreading it out over two weeks, I think it's best you get ready for a mega post. I will also be profiling the people who made my top twenty in what will be known as "Icons at a Glance."
  • Every influential moment for this blog will be collected in what will be titled as "The Greatest Montage Ever Made."
  • My last three series finale recaps will be posted to honor The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Mad Men, and Community.
  • The biggest Hot/Not Meter ever created: the "My Power Is Beyond Your Understanding" Hot/Not Meter. (Also known as, the tradition that refuses to die.)
  • On July 31st, I will share a record-breaking farewell post and a promise for the future.
  • I will be posting a satirical and detailed analysis of The Hoedown Throwdown, a song performed by Miley Cyrus that was featured on my first post ever made on this blog.
  • I will finally be reaching one hundred posts in the month of March, the only month not to have this feat accomplished.
  • By evaluating blog statistics, I will discuss the top-viewed posts ever posted on this blog.
  • From December 1st to December 31st of this year, I will have one last celebration of the holiday season, my favorite time of year.
  • Every post I typically make at the end of the year to honor the best of the past three hundred and sixty-five days will be bulked up to feature every list, but instead of the past year, it will be from 2009 to 2016 (also known as the duration of the blog). This includes the best days, books, shows, episodes, movies, songs, posters, trailers, Entertainment Weekly covers, Sports Illustrated covers, tweets, videos, commercials, sports games, and comic strips.
  • I will re-evaluate every single person who has been banned from this blog. Maybe some will come back into the good graces.
  • Contrarily, I will also have one last induction into the Power Hall of Fame. (And maybe you will get a front row seat.)
  • We will also, during an undisclosed month, have one last month-long challenge.
  • Plus, much more amazing, conclusive content! (And yes, I know that's a cop-out.)
It's going to be a great ride!

First Day of School - 2015

This is a good picture to use, right? El oh el. Anyway, my last first day of school was today now that I am a senior in high school. But this is more of a what's happening post. The real post is right above it.

New Netflix Poll

A new poll has replaced the one to determine the most anticipated movie of the summer (spoiler alert: you picked Jurassic World!). Now it's time to determine which Netflix Original Series is the best. Are you a fan of drama and, ipso facto, a fan of House of Cards? Or are you more on the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt side of things? Netflix has a stellar line up of programming. But which of the originals is the best?

Point Pleasant Police Department

When Bill Hader stopped by The Tonight Show to hang out with Jimmy Fallon and promote Trainwreck, everyone knew that it was a safe bet that some fun would be had. And of course, there definitely was. In the return of the popular sketch, Point Pleasant Police Department, Hader and Fallon were two cops who spit on each other. But it just works.

Norm Macdonald Is Now Colonel Sanders

Remember when I posted about how Darrell Hammond was to portray Colonel Sanders in a new KFC advertising campaign? Yeah, well that's over now. He's been replaced by another SNL alum. Norm Macdonald. It's like Christopher Walken as Captain Hook. It's just so good. (The ad is worth it for the shrug of nonsense.) Whatever.

Garrett Morris: Ant-Man

One thing everyone who goes to see a Marvel movie expects to see is a cameo from Marvel Comics creator, Stan Lee. And while this need is satisfied in Marvel's latest installment, Ant-Man, another cameo is equally welcome and so much more surprising. Garrett Morris, who once played Ant-Man (Hank Pym) in a very old sketch from Saturday Night Live in the 1970s, makes an appearance in the film as an old man in a car that Paul Rudd lands on. Such an obscure reference but just so welcome!

Albert Haynesworth's Letter

In one of the more moving stories in the recent world of sports, former Tennessee Titans, Washington Redskins, and New England Patriots lineman, Albert Haynesworth, penned an open letter (that can be read here) to himself with details about everything he wish the younger version of himself knew at the respective times in his career. I followed his career loosely, but the letter was very emotional and honest that I figured I'd share.

True Confessions

Any episode of The Tonight Show with Tina Fey as a guest is sure to be a solid episode. But nothing compares to an episode of The Tonight Show with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (making her Tonight Show debut, no less). To promote the first release of the trailer for Sisters, the two came on to hang out with Jimmy Fallon and they played a hilarious round of True Confessions that can be enjoyed above.

Sweater Jerseys

So, yes, I did just post about the minor league baseball affiliate team for the Washington Nationals wearing Spartan Cheerleaders jerseys for their Saturday Night Live Night, but this fresh take on the baseball jersey is worth sharing, as well. On July 5th, the Altoona Curve, an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, wore jerseys themed like Mr. Rogers' sweaters from Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. They're pretty awesome. I'm now a fan of the Curve!

She's Not Me

Jenny Lewis made a new song titled, She's Not Me, but it's the music video that stands out because of its notoriety. Lewis, throughout her career, has also been an actress and (for the sake of this post) she starred in Troop Beverly Hills, The Wizard, and an episode of The Golden Girls. For this music video, Lewis enlisted the help of some pretty fun comedians to recreate some of these scenes from her career. Zosia Mamet from Girls and Mad Men makes an appearance, SNL's Vanessa Bayer appears, as well, in two roles. And finally, the great Fred Armisen plays Sophia from The Golden Girls. It's a solid video.

Steve Martin's Lifetime Achievement Award

From the American Film Institute and presented by Mel Brooks, Steve Martin was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in comedy back in June. Not only is he unquestionably deserving of the honor, but he was doubly deserving of the ceremony surrounding it. One moment in particular was transcribed by Vulture due to its hilarity and well-suitedness. Tina Fey's speech, which managed to stand out amongst a slew of iconic comedians including Carl Reiner, Martin Short, Sarah Silverman, Steve Carell, Dan Aykroyd, and Amy Poehler. Thanks Vulture for transcribing Fey's speech!

The Office Gets Real

Buzzfeed has a pretty good idea of which television shows deserve lists based around emotions felt by fans as caused by the shows themselves. The Office is definitely worthy of a list Buzzfeed declares to be titled, 27 Times The Office Got Way, Way Too Real. It's a solid list-slash-trip down memory lane. Be prepared to miss the greatest show ever made.

SNL Jerseys

The Potomac Nationals are a minor league baseball team affiliated, of course, with the Washington Nationals. They have generated some pretty good buzz though, by hosting a Saturday Night Live Night back on May 30th and they wore some pretty killer jerseys modeled after the Spartans Cheerleaders uniforms from the old sketches with Will Ferrell and Cheri Oteri. Go Potomac! (Wherever that is.)

Brother Orange Came to America

One of my favorite stories ever published on the Internet was about a writer for Buzzfeed named Matt who ended up becoming a Chinese celebrity and finding a friend for life, all by an accidental series of events that came together perfectly. It was a heartwarming article and I am very pleased to share the second part to it, if you desire to read it. Love it.

A Very Murray Christmas

In the latest news on things that are amazing and I will absolutely be tuning into because I love the holiday season and I love Bill Murray, a new Netflix Christmas special is coming to the streaming service titled, A Very Murray Christmas. It has been described as "an homage to classic variety specials" with Bill Murray starring as himself, worried that no one is going to make it to his Christmas television show because of a snowstorm in Manhattan, but eventually they make it, "singing and dancing in the holiday spirit." The special is being written by Murray, Mitch Glazer, and Sofia Coppolla, who will also serve as the special's director. Also making appearances on the special are such amazing celebrities as George Clooney, Amy Poehler, Michael Cera, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, Jason Schwartzman, and Rashida Jones, among others. The special comes in December and I just can't wait. Between this and The Night Before, it's going to be a great holiday season!
