30 Rock
*BLERG. SPOILERS AHEAD!*
Another show has come to a close. This time it's name is 30 Rock. The wacky comedy about the behind-the-scenes of a fake NBC show, TGS. For the past seven years, we have wanted to go to there. There being a half-hour of comedy bliss that only 30 Rock could provide. The show won multiple Best Comedy awards at the Emmys, but what really mattered was Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski and Jack MacBrayer portraying Liz Lemon, Jack Donaghy, Tracy Jordan, Jenna Maroney and Kenneth Parcells.
The hour-long series finale started with Liz sending her new children off to school and her husband off to work, where she was left to stay at home. Eventually, Liz realized that she's not cut out for staying at home. She switched with Criss and she became the one who would work. Kenneth, the new President of NBC, told Liz that she had to make one more episode of the recently cancelled, TGS, or else Tracy would get 30 million dollars.
Jack then decided to test his happiness and found that he was unhappy. Therefore, he decided to quit his new job as CEO of Kabletown. This prompts Liz to realize that all the times that Jack gave her advice, he didn't he even know what he was doing with his own life. She argues and storms out.
I had a feeling that Tracy and Jenna, two of the most selfish, immature characters in the history of television, yet undoubtedly hilarious, only one of them could genuinely develop as a character. It turned out to be Tracy. Better reasons will come later, but the first was that while Jenna tried to find a new role as an actress and tried to make the writers pay attention to her, when they were preoccupied with ending the show, Tracy was making amends with Kenneth and he made Kenneth promise to break his promise of always being there for Tracy, due to advice from Grizz and Dot Com.
While Liz had convinced the writers to create one last show for TGS, Tracy was trying to avoid doing it, even getting Al Roker to try to help him. It wasn't because he wanted the 30 million, but rather that he couldn't stand to say goodbye. Liz brings Tracy to a strip club, like in the pilot, to talk some sense into him and Tracy finally agrees to shoot the episode.
Jenna was struggling to find a reason to cry during the TGS finale, because she wasn't sad at all about the show ending. Finally, when the crew took her mirror away, she was able to cry and reminisce about all the good times that she had with the mirror.
Meanwhile, in the writing staff's room, Lutz had just been chosen to pick the lunch for the final day. He wanted Blimpie's, a way to get back at the other writers, specifically Frank, for treating him terribly for the past seven years. Eventually, Liz locked him in a room and was able to get better food until Lutz escaped through the ceiling, ruined the food, and won his Blimpie's.
While all of this was going on, Pete kept alluding to the fact that he was going to fake his own death. Which it seems that he did. Maybe he did...
Anyway, Jack was still distraught from his fight with Liz, so he went through different steps to make Liz think that he was going to kill himself, including crying in front of Jenna. When Liz rushed to stop Jack, only to see him jump off a bridge, but onto a boat, nonetheless, she ended her grudge against him and then Jack sailed off to find what makes him happy. However, he turned right around after about ten feet and proclaimed that he would make clear dishwashers to see what was going on inside.
With Liz and Jack far away from the TGS' final episode, Tracy, Jenna, Lutz, Frank and Kenneth enjoyed the show. (Not Pete because he faked his death, remember?) Tracy bid the viewers farewell and then Jenna sent the show off with a song.
Here are the final scenes:
Plot twist! That wasn't it! We got an ending tag! We got to see where the characters of 30 Rock ended up one year later. Pete was discovered by his wife and forced to end his fake death charade and go home. Grizz had success with his new show, Grizz & Her's. Jenna won a Tony for Best Actress in a Musical, but it turns out that she really didn't, she was just stealing the real winner's thunder. Her reaction to being forced off the stage? She flashed the audience. Liz was working on the Grizz & Her's show, with her kids playing the children on the show. Jack was back in his office, even richer from his dishwasher idea and with a new assistant to replace Jonathan. Tracy finally reunited with his father, who came back from getting cigarettes, at long last! Then, it got weird. A Ms. Lemon was sitting across from Kenneth at his desk. She pitched a show idea that took place at 30 Rockefeller Center, based on what her great-grandmother had told her. Kenneth liked the idea and then it panned to the window where there were flying cars. I guess this implies that Kenneth is truly immortal. Yes, Kenneth WILL outlive us all. It was a strange ending, just like 30 Rock was a strange show.
I liked the finale. I also liked these, my favorite lines of the finale:
"Where are all the baby pigeons?" -Kenneth
"He's in a really bad place. Like Mickey Rourke when. I can't do this anymore, I've never met Mickey Rourke." -Jenna
"Thank you, America! That's our show. Not a lot of people watched it, but the joke's on you because we got paid anyway!" -Tracy
"I love you too, Jack." -Liz
"Good god, Lemon!" -Jack
Thursday nights on NBC will never quite be the same. Sure, we get Community back next week, but 30 Rock. 30 Rock is over. There will always be that nonsensical void that will be tough to fill. I'll miss you 30 Rock.
