Book Answer: 1967.
It's really hard to go against 2004, that was important for the sanity and faith of Red Sox fans. However, the book makes a strong argument for 1967. The Impossible Dream. Coming off of one of the worst seasons in 1966, there were rumors that the Sox would leave Boston. But the impossible happened. The Sox started winning and fans started caring again. Lonborg had a Cy Young year. Yaz won the Triple Crown and the MVP award. It restored the Red Sox in the eyes of Boston sports and baseball fans. They were relevant again and it was important as it may have kept them in Boston. But after this season, it might be 2013.
I will stick with 2004!
