From British sitcom, Gavin & Stacey, Hulu comedy, The Wrong Mans, and Tony-winning production, One Man, Two Guvnors, James Corden has officially been announced as Craig Ferguson's replacement for The Late Late Show on CBS. And might I add: Really?! I'll be the first to admit that, yes, the man I thought would be amazing for the job was a white male. Ricky Gervais. He'd be amazing and I don't like the idea of sacrificing quality just to be diverse. Obviously, late night television is in dire need of someone, well, not white. Sure, we have Chelsea Handler, but even then, the late night landscape still needs more women. Let's take a look at the laundry list of diverse people CBS could have gone with and might I add that most of these people are overqualified.
Ellen DeGeneres
Wayne Brady
Aisha Tyler
Kathy Griffin (who was sickeningly told that CBS was "not looking for any females")
Amy Schumer
Maya Rudolph
Sarah Silverman
Billy Eichner
Neil Patrick Harris
Tina Fey
Dave Chappelle
Arsenio Hall
George Lopez
Ken Jeong
Hannibal Burress
There is some good host material there. This is not to say that any of these people would even want to do it, but rather that they have the potential. It is also not to say that James Corden will do a poor job with the franchise. After all, nobody thought Craig would do well and clearly, he did. It's more of a thing where....there were better choices. So here's your late night landscape for the next thirty or so years.
Jimmy Fallon
Seth Meyers
Jimmy Kimmel
Stephen Colbert
James Corden
Conan O'Brien
Jon Stewart
Chelsea Handler
Love it or hate it.
I think Wayne Brady would have been the best and funniest choice!
