Robin Williams

Sorry. I know that's a lot of tweets. But it's good to see how much love there is Robin Williams. How much of an impact he had on anyone and everyone. But this tweet, most of all. This one gets me.

Included above are just some of his iconic performances. Mork & Mindy, Good Will Hunting, Mrs. Doubtfire, Aladdin, Dead Poets Society, Night at the Museum, Flubber, Jumanji, Patch Adams, Popeye, Hook, Happy Feet, and Wilfred. Such greatness and such hilarity. The way he changed the course of comedy, but also gave some of the best dramatic performances in acting history is unparalleled. He did so much. And it was all good. That's why it's so terrible that he's gone now. It's such a shame. He could make anyone happy but himself. He is a legend. So many of those tweets get me. Especially Questlove's. If only he could see this reaction.

My father shared this:

Orson: The report, Mork.
Mork: This week I discovered a terrible disease called loneliness.
Orson: Do many people on Earth suffer from this disease?
Mork: Oh, yes, sir. And how they suffer. One man I know suffers so much he has to take a medication called bourbon, even that doesn't help much because then he can hear the paint dry.
Orson: Does bed rest help?
Mork: No, because I've heard that sleeping alone is part of the problem. You see, Orson, loneliness is a disease of the spirit. People who have it think that no one cares about them.
Orson: Do you have any idea why?
Mork: Yes, sir, you can count on me. You see, when children are young, they're told not to talk to strangers. When they go to school, they're told not to talk to the person next to them. Finally, when they're very old, they're told not to talk to themselves. Who's left?
Orson: Are you saying Earthlings make each other lonely?
Mork: No, sir, I'm saying just the opposite. They make themselves lonely. They're so busy looking out for number one that there's no room for two.
Orson: It's too bad everybody down there can't get together and find a cure.
Mork: Here's the paradox, sir. Because if they did get together, they wouldn't need one. Isn't that zenlack?

We also watched an episode of Mork & Mindy last night where Robin Williams played both Mork and himself and he spoke deeply about the effects of fame. The darker side. He talks about how some stars just couldn't take it all, including Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, and John Lennon. I guess it's a shame you can add Robin Williams to the list.

Rest in peace, Robin Williams.

  1. So incredibly sad, heartbreaking. He did mean so much to so many. I just wish he had been able to reach out one more time. He meant a lot to me when I was little. As Mork, he learned lessons about what being human was all about, lessons kids learned from as well. He also showed us that you could be weird and funny and just yourself and it was okay. He brought so much joy to so many when they needed it. I wish I could have given some back when he needed it. Thank you, Robin. You will be missed.
