The series finale of Desperate Housewives occurred on Sunday. The depth will not be as deep as the likes of say, Chuck, because it has faded in quality, in my mind. I used to like it, used to be one of my favorites, until
*SPOILER! SPOILER! SPOILER! SPOILER!*
Well, now you can't say that I didn't warn you. ...until they came up with stupid story lines like Tom and Lynette's divorce or Mike's death, etc. But still the finale somewhat made amends. The first half had story lines of Lynette trying to get Tom back, Lee preparing Susan to move, and Bree's murder trial. Renee and Ben had provided some trial setbacks. Plot twist: Mrs. McCluskey overheard Bree and Trip, lawyer and Chuck Bartowski's father (how many Chuck references can we get into a Desperate Housewives post? Nerd Herd. Jeffster. Buy More. Sorry.), arguing about letting Gaby or Carlos go to the stand for Ramon Sanchez's murder. Instead, McCluskey asks Trip to go to the stand and then she confesses to killing Sanchez, Gaby's bad stepfather! Bree gets off and McCluskey gets off as well due to her old age and declining health. At the end of the first half, Lynette goes to get ice and Tom stops her in the road and confesses his love, a reluctant-at-first Lynette eventually does the same and they kiss, you know, the whole camera swirling bit. Yadda yadda yadda. Second half:
Julie is pregnant, Renee and Ben are getting married, Gaby got promoted, Lynette got a job offer from Katherine, Susan is still moving, and Bree and Trip are arguing because of Trip still trying to get Gaby to testify. Well, after some limo and wedding dress turmoil, Renee and Ben do get married and Bob and Lee deliver the toast. Well, during the reception, Porter rushes in and gets Tom and Lynette to join him en route to the birth of his and Julie's child. Susan gets an offer on her house, Gaby gets fired, Lynette takes the job. Here's the most important scenario of Part Two, however. Mrs. McCluskey has Roy play Johnny Mathis' Wonderful, Wonderful! over and over again. As the song plays it shows one life coming into the world, Julie's kid, and one life exiting. Yes, sadly, one of the only characters I liked on the show, succumbed to lung cancer. McCluskey, who has been there since Season One, died. It was quite sad. She was cool. Anyhow, Lynette, Susan, Bree, and Gaby all play poker one last time and they all vow that it won't be the last, but it was. Lynette and Tom move to New York for her job and they have an apartment over Central Park where she yells at her six grandchildren (probably all 'P' names.) Bree and Trip move to Kentucky where Bree joins the State Legislature. Gaby and Carlos move to Los Angeles where Gaby gets a show on the Home Shopping Network. Susan and MJ move in with Julie and give the house to a mysterious new housewife (Wisteria Lane won't long for turmoil) with a box and they take one last drive on the Lane. All of the people who have died on the show watch them drive and the show ends.
Not yet, though: McCluskey, portrayed by Kathryn Joosten, who won two Emmys on the show and has survived lung cancer twice, sends a message about lung cancer awareness.
Good ending.
Was a good ending, as good as the show could have at this point, I suppose. Glad Lynette and Tom got back together, but I still think one of the dumbest things ever was killing off Mike for just a stupid plot point. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteThis last episode was really good besides the mysterious new housewife. I didn’t like the ending very much because I want to know what was in the box. I didn’t get a chance to watch this on Sunday, but it was recorded using PrimeTime Anytime on my Hopper. A co-worker from Dish told me about the new Auto Hop feature which, when enabled, allows me to skip the commercials without having to do anything. It was awesome to have when I was watching Desperate Housewives on Monday, because I didn’t have to worry about ads throughout the series finale.
