Argument 68: Which Was The Greater Accomplishment, 56 Game Hitting Streak or Batting .406?

Book Answer: Batting .406

Ted Williams' 1941 season was remarkable. The year he hit .406, the last player to hit .400. Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak was extremely, very impressive, but Teddy Ballgame's was the greatest for a few key reasons:

  1. It took the entire season. Every game was needed to hit over .400. DiMaggio's took 56 games. Ted has more perseverance.
  2. If you added each hitting streak from Williams, it probably exceed Joe's. Every hit was necessary. It's not like Ted never put a streak together.
  3. On the last day of the season, Ted was above .400 and was offered to sit out the game to stay that way. He played and went 2 for 3. Raising the batting average.

  1. I agree with you, but they are both great accomplishments!
