Argument 66: Who Was Really At Fault In The Ed Armbrister Play?

Book Answer: Carlton Fisk

In the bottom of the tenth in game three of the 1975 World Series, it was tied with Caesar Geronimo on first.  Armbrister bunted and the ball just made it past the plate. He collides with Carlton Fisk who then throws the ball into center field. Geronimo goes to third with Armbrister at first. Morgan singles Geronimo in and the Reds win the game. The book says that Fisk could have calmly tagged Geronimo and thrown to second for a double play. However, I think the blame lies with the home plate umpire, Larry Barnett. If the runner collided with the fielder, the runner is automatically called out for interference. It was an obvious call that was not made. Fisk did not help the situation, but Barnett is to blame.
